Self Photo Studio Startup Costs: Initial and Monthly Costs by Item

VISD Team

2026.09.01

The first question most people ask about opening a self photo studio is how much it costs. There is no single answer, because the total depends heavily on store size, number of booths, location and business model.

This article splits the costs into upfront and monthly items and explains what drives each one. Knowing the items first makes it much easier to spot what is missing when you compare quotes.

Upfront costs: what you pay once before opening

1. Lease-related costs

This covers the deposit, any key money paid to the previous tenant, and agent fees. Prime ground-floor spots cost more, but location is closely tied to sales in this business, so weigh it against expected revenue rather than simply cutting it.

2. Photo booth or photo kiosk equipment

The capture equipment includes the camera, lighting, screen, printer and payment device. The number of machines follows from store size and expected visitors. More machines shorten queues but add cost and take space, so finding the right number for your area matters.

3. Interior and signage

Finishes, lighting, the props corner and signs. In a photo booth store the space itself is part of the product, so the interior is a meaningful share of the budget. Confirming equipment specifications first helps you avoid rework.

4. Initial consumables and props

You will need the first stock of paper and ribbon, props such as headbands and glasses, and mirrors and storage.

5. Franchise fees or brand development

A franchise usually means franchise and training fees. Your own brand means paying for a logo, brand design and frame design.

Monthly costs: what you pay every month

  • Rent and maintenance fees: the largest fixed cost.

  • Consumables: paper and ribbon grow with the number of sessions.

  • Electricity and internet: machines and lighting stay on, and payments and remote management need a connection.

  • Payment fees: card and mobile payment fees.

  • Upkeep: labor or an outside service for cleaning, tidying and restocking.

  • Software or brand fees: depending on your model, royalties or software subscriptions may apply.

Four things that drive the total

  1. Location: a store of the same size can have very different deposits and rent depending on the area.

  2. Store size and number of booths: equipment and interior costs move together.

  3. Business model: a franchise brings fees and royalties, your own brand brings brand development costs.

  4. Interior level: how much effort goes into realizing the concept.

A simple way to estimate profit

Actual profit varies by location, but the calculation is the same.

  • Monthly revenue = average daily sessions × average payment per session × days open

  • Monthly profit = monthly revenue − (rent + consumables + electricity and internet + payment fees + upkeep + other fees)

  • Payback period (months) = total upfront cost ÷ monthly profit

Estimate daily sessions conservatively and separately for weekdays and weekends. Using weekend numbers alone makes the payback period look shorter than it is.

What to check when comparing quotes

  • Does the equipment price include installation, shipping and payment terminal setup?

  • Is the capture software a one-time purchase or a monthly subscription?

  • Where do consumables come from, and on what terms?

  • What does after-sales service cover, and how long do part replacements take?

  • Are remote monitoring and sales management included as standard?

Frequently asked questions

Can I start a self photo studio on a small budget?

Using fewer booths or placing a photo kiosk inside an existing store can lower the upfront cost considerably. Cutting too far on location or equipment quality affects sales, though, so decide carefully where to save and where not to.

What is usually the largest cost?

Lease-related costs and equipment are usually the largest. Both depend heavily on location and the number of booths, so review them together during consultation.
